FIS Climate Action This Season: Recognizing Impact Across the Community

This season, the International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) continues to strengthen its commitment to measurable environmental action through the FIS Impact Programme. A key focus has been to highlight the concrete progress being made across the FIS community.

The Impact Programme continues to evolve, turning sustainability commitments into meaningful action by supporting National Ski Associations (NSAs) and Local Organizing Committees (LOCs) through:

  • Practical tools to help improve sustainability in snow sports

  • Opportunities to share knowledge and best practices across organizations

  • Guidance to measure, track, and demonstrate real progress

From Biodiversity to Climate Action: The Pillars of the FIS Impact Programme

The FIS Impact Programme is built around three core environmental pillars:

  • Biodiversity & Nature Protection

  • Climate Action

  • Circular Economy

Last year, the FIS Sustainability Award focused on Biodiversity and Nature Protection. For the 2025/26 season, the focus shifts to Climate Action, placing the spotlight on the FIS CO₂ Calculator

The FIS CO₂ Calculator supports the FIS community in moving from climate awareness to measurable emissions reductions by helping organizers and federations understand, track, and manage their carbon footprint.

FIS Climate Award: Celebrating Those Who Turn Data into Climate Action

The FIS Climate Award recognizes those demonstrating exemplary use of the FIS CO₂ Calculator to measure, understand, and actively reduce their emissions.

Awards will be given to:

  • The best NSA

  • The best LOC

The award is not about perfection. It is about credibility, transparency, and learning. Applications are evaluated across five core areas:

  • Data quality and transparency

  • How widely the tool is used across events

  • How insights and data are integrated into decision-making

  • Evidence that emissions are being reduced

  • Engagement and communication

These criteria translate the Sports for Climate Action Framework into clear, measurable initiatives for events and federations, improving planning and decision-making based on emissions data across the FIS community. Supporting this, representatives from the UN Sport for Climate Action Framework will join the award jury, strengthening the credibility of the evaluation process.

The winning NSA and LOC will be recognized at the FIS Autumn Technical Meetings and will receive financial support to further advance their climate and environmental efforts.

Recognizing the Athlete Community: The FIS Athlete Climate Action Award

FIS has also introduced an additional award to recognize climate action led directly by athletes. The FIS Athlete Climate Action Award honors those who are actively contributing to the reduction of CO₂ emissions through personal initiatives, projects, advocacy, or innovative ideas.

Athletes play an important role in shaping the future of snow sports and inspiring communities around the world. By highlighting athlete-led initiatives, FIS aims to celebrate leadership in promoting lower-carbon practices within the sport and beyond.

Viessmann Combined for Change FIS Climate Awards:  Two Additional Awards for Nordic Combined LOCs

In parallel, FIS and its long-time partner Viessmann Climate Solutions are launching two additional awards dedicated to Nordic Combined World Cup organizers.

The Viessmann Combined for Change FIS Climate Awards will recognize:

  • The Nordic Combined LOC demonstrating the most consistent and systematic use of the CO₂ Calculator

  • The Nordic Combined LOC achieving the most credible and measurable CO₂ emissions reductions

These awards recognize both the effective use of data and the practical changes made by organizers to reduce emissions when delivering events.

Efforts to make the FIS Nordic Combined World Cup as sustainable as possible will be more important than ever in order to balance environmental responsibility and sporting tradition.

The Viessmann Combined for Change FIS Climate Awards build on last year’s Combined for Change Sustainability Tour and Award, continuing the joint FIS–Viessmann initiative to engage all LOCs in concrete sustainability actions.

The two most effective initiatives supporting sustainable winter sports during the 2025/26 Nordic Combined season will receive €2,500 each to further develop their sustainability engagement.

The Direction for the Season

The 2025/26 season marks an important step in strengthening climate action across snow sports by showcasing organizations and athletes that move from commitment to implementation.

By highlighting NSAs and LOCs that use the FIS CO₂ Calculator to inform decisions and reduce emissions, FIS continues to encourage practical and measurable progress. Organizers across the FIS community are empowered to turn climate ambition into concrete action, while athletes are also celebrated for their role in promoting lower-carbon practices in snow sports.
