Partnerships & Collaboration

We Can’t Do This Alone, and We Don’t Want To

Delivering sustainability to snow sports is a challenge that demands strong partnerships. Recognizing this, FIS collaborates with leading scientific institutions and international organizations to drive innovative initiatives that improve sustainability in snow sports.

World Meteorological Organization (WMO)

The first-ever partnership between a UN agency and an international sports federation. FIS and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) combine meteorological science and climate data to demonstrate how rising temperatures, shrinking snow cover, and thawing permafrost pose threats to winter sports. The collaboration uses this data to develop sustainability initiatives and educational activities for National Ski Associations, venue managers, event organizers, and athletes, aiming to strengthen dialogue between science and sport and promote real-world climate solutions.

European Space Agency (ESA)

Through the Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) program, FIS and the European Space Agency (ESA) are utilizing Earth observation, including satellite imagery, to enhance environmental monitoring, enable smarter decision-making, and drive more sustainable practices in snow sports. In particular, FIS supports the “Space for Sustainability in Sports and Mass Events” call for proposals, funding innovative feasibility studies and pilot projects that use satellite data and AI to reduce the environmental footprint of large-scale events. This includes solutions for carbon reduction, sustainable mobility, wildlife protection, and circular economy applications.

Milano Cortina 2026

At Milano Cortina 2026, and in partnership with the Politecnico di Milano, FIS is helping to develop a protocol for sustainable temporary infrastructure by supporting data collection. Designed to align with the International Olympic Committee's requirements, this protocol establishes a clear, forward-looking standard for how temporary structures are procured, rented, and used at future events.

Ski Sport Finland & Solved (White Winters)

Ski Sport Finland & Solved (White Winters) is a pioneering initiative focused on developing sustainable solutions for winter sports events. Through this collaboration, FIS provides Local Organizing Committees with practical guidance for responsible procurement.
