FIS Masters World Cup opening races in Nevados de Chillán cancelled following hotel fire

The opening races of the 2026-27 FIS Masters World Cup season in Nevados de Chillán (CHI) have been cancelled following a fire that completely destroyed the Hotel Alto Nevados on the afternoon of 6 September. 

More than 30 Masters racers were staying at the hotel while participating in a pre-season race camp ahead of the World Cup opening. Fortunately, all guests and staff were able to evacuate safely. The Nevados de Chillán resort has provided extensive support, assisting those affected with documentation, medication and other immediate needs. 

Approximately 100 Masters athletes from 15 nations had entered the season-opening World Cup races. The 2026-27 season will now begin with the first stop of the FIS Masters Indoor Cup in Wittenburg (GER) in early November.

The International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) expresses its sincere gratitude to the Nevados de Chillán resort team and emergency services for their swift response and support to those affected. FIS also extends its full support to the Nevados de Chillán ski resort, the Local Organizing Committee and the Chilean National Ski Association during this difficult time. 

Our thoughts are with all athletes, staff, families and members of the local community impacted by this dramatic incident. We are relieved that no serious injuries have been reported and wish everyone affected strength and a swift recovery from this unfortunate event.
