With a population of about 1.400.000 people, Almaty is the major cultural and commercial centre of Kazakhstan. Located in a mountainous area of southern Kazakhstan close to the border to Kyryzstan, the former capital of Kazakhstan is one of the most important cities of the country. While the location is already known for hosting ski jumping Summer Grand Prix and Continental Cup events, it had its Nordic Combined premiere in the winter of 2011/12.

The ski juming competition was held on the new HS 140 large hill, the only facility in Kazakhstan where World Cup events can take place. The venue also offers a HS106 normal hill and several brand-new smaller training hills. The cross-country competition takes place on a track in an old quarry which is also used as a motocross track which makes it very demanding with a lots of twist and turns and differences in altitude.
