It was a thrilling day in Krynica, Poland on the VISA FIS Snowboard Alpine World Cup tour. The conditions were better than expected and the sport delivered the drama once again.

Living legend Ramona Theresia Hofmeister (GER) showed why she has been the most dominant force in the sport for awhile. The German continues her remarkable second-half of the season with a win on day one in Krynica after her early season struggles.

Hofmeister put down flawless runs on her way to the top of the podium for her sixth win in the last seven races. The win moves her into first in the PGS crystal globe standings with one race to go on Sunday.

“It is crazy. I am really happy right now. It was a tough race, every run in the finals was really special. I am really happy because I collected some very important points and have a chance for the PGS globe for the sixth time in a row. It feels amazing to be in the yellow bib again,”Hofmeister said.

Hofmeister is one step closer to her sixth PGS crystal globe. She now holds a nine-point lead over Tsubaki Miki (JPN). The Japanese star led for most of the season. Saturday did not go as planned as she caught an edge and stumbled, suffering a DNF in the quarterfinals against Julie Zogg (SUI).

It will set up a duel between the top two in the sport since last season for the PGS globe on Sunday. Now Miki will be the chaser attempting to knock off the legend for her first career crystal globe. Hofmeister is going in to the showdown stress-free.

“Enjoy the race, no pressure, just enjoy the race,”Hofmeister said.

It was not an easy day on Saturday for Hofmeister though. In the semifinals, she fell behind in the flat section but used her otherworldly skills to carve a path down the stretch to make it first to the line against Lucia Dalmasso (ITA).

It was a nice return to form for Dalmasso who dealt with injuries earlier this season. She ended in fourth.

Michelle Dekker (NED) was solid all day as she cruised to her second big final of the season. Things went a little awry in the big final as Dekker fell after catching the toeside edge with five gates to go. She ended in second for her fourth podium of the season.

Elsewhere Sabine Payer (AUT) had a chance at the globe before Saturday but was knocked out in the first round by Zogg (SUI) who pulled off the stunner before her even bigger result taking out Miki. Zogg rounded out the podium for her second straight top-three finish.

Maurizio Bormolini (ITA) ends in third but clinches PGS globe

The Italian men dominated the day in Krynica. Maurizio Bormolini came into the day with the yellow bib as the PGS leader. The day did not end as he settled for third but it was enough to still clinch the crystal globe since no one can reach him in points with a win on Sunday. He will have to wait until Sunday to receive his trophy.

It was an emotional day for the Italian. He competed against Italian teammates in every round, eventually losing to Roland Fischnaller (ITA) by a hair in the semifinals. Bormolini had a special message after making his fifth podium of the season.

“I want to dedicate this podium to my cousin, he died two days ago and this podiums is for him,”Bormolini said

Bormolini raced Daniele Bagozza (ITA) in the quarters. Bormolini was cruising in the semifinals before a slight stumble where he caught some air and Fischnaller snatched the opportunity to move on to the big final and send the PGS leader to the small final. Bormolini finished third after beating Edwin Coratti (ITA) in the small final.

It will be a special day for Bormolini on Sunday as he raises his first career crystal globe as the PGS discipline season champion.

Topping the podium on the day was Fischnaller in a shocking result. Even the veteran was a bit surprised but he had some extra motivation.

“It feels very good. I had at home two training races with Mauro (Bormolini) and we pushed each other so it looks like I am in shape now. I changed the board in the middle of the season, and that is not normal (laughs). But I made a huge step forward and have a lot of confidence now. My daughter called me yesterday and said if I win, she will bake me a cake, so I wanted that cake,”Fischnaller said.

The Italian knew he needed a result if he wants to qualify for the year-end World Championships.

“I had to push very hard if I want to go to St. Moritz, I had to deliver something,” Fischnaller said. “Being almost 45 years old, it is not easy to be at the top level so I am super happy.”

Fischnaller (ITA) used a dramatic comeback to beat his Italian teammate Mirko Felicetti (ITA) in the quarterfinals. He began the knockouts with a huge stunner against Andreas Prommegger (AUT) in the first round, hurting Prommegger’s standing in the points race.

It was the first win of the season and 23rd of his World Cup career.

Behind Fischnaller was another shock. It was Sangho Lee (KOR) who bounced back from recent injury to take second. Earlier, Lee edged Benjamin Karl (AUT) at the line in a photo finish to move on to the semifinals. Lee then repeated his magic, winning by 0.01 against Edwin Coratti (ITA) in the semifinals.

Radoslav Yankov (BUL) posted the slowest qualifying time, ending his chances at the PGS globe despite sitting in second place in the standings.

The men and women will return to the same slope for the final PGS race of the season on Sunday beginning with qualification at 9:00 and finals at 13:00 local time.
