It was a thrilling day two of the Visa FIS Snowboard Alpine World Cup in Sunny Mylin, China with icy conditions. The PGS turns were extra challenging but the best in the world persevered through to fill the podium places. There were some spills amidst the thrills but in the end, Tsubaki Miki (JPN) and Mirko Felicetti (ITA) claimed the top prizes.

Tsubaki Miki reclaims her throne

It was a rough day as multiple riders suffered a DNF. However, the reigning champ showed her resolve with a beautiful bounceback performance. The Japanese star improved upon her quarterfinal exit from Saturday with her first win of the season.

The win gives her eight career World Cup wins. She moves to a tie for first place in the overall and PGS standings alongside Saturday’s race winnner Lucia Dalmasso (ITA). It may seem to come easy for Miki at this point, but the race was anything but simple.

“Today’s race was so difficult. It was so icy and bumpy. It was scary yesterday, I lost my feeling but today I found it and am happy,”Miki said.

When asked if she found her confidence from last season’s triumphant success, the Japanese answered succinct.

“Last season is last season. This season is this season so I am just focused on this season. Next we have the night race in Cortina. I am not so good at the night races (laughs) but I will do my best.”Mki said.

That laser focus could provide problems to the rest of the field as the season progresses.

In second was veteran Julie Zogg (SUi). The finish gives Zogg 41 World Cup podiums as she rounds out her career with even more accolades.

“The big final was difficult in both parts. I was getting better and better but the slope was hard,”Zogg said.

Rounding out the podium was another familiar figure in Sabine Payer (AUT). Her result moves her one ahead of Zogg with 42 career World Cup podiums.

“It was difficult today to ride but it was difficult for everyone. I am happy that I improved form my riding yesterday. I changed a bit of my riding and tried to be on the board and am happy that it worked out”Payer said.

Zuzana Maderova (CZE) finished fourth after a DNF in the small final.

On Saturday 16-year-old Malena Zamfirova (BUL) finished third but wiped out in the first round on Sunday for a DNF. The other podium finishers from race one did not fair much better. Lucia Dalmasso (ITA) followed her win with a quarterfinal exit. Her countrywoman and podium-mate from day one, Elisa Caffont, was also eliminated at the same stage. Aleksandra Krol-Walas’ (POL) disappointing weekend continued with an early round loss.

Felicetti tops podium in shocker

The Italian men showed off their domination once again with four Italians posting the four fastes qualifying times. The group was led by Mirko Felicetti (ITA) who kept that lead all day on the way to the win.

“For me, it is everything. I worked a lot. I am very happy for everyone who worked with me, When everything goes very well, then everything is easy. I had a lot of emotions in my head so I am so happy with this result.”Felicetti said..

Felicetti rebounded from just missing the podium on Saturday, something quickly wiped from his mind.

“Yesterday doesn’t matter, today is a new race day. I pushed myself and was able to do it. Now we go back to Europe to eat some pasta,”Felicetti said.

“It was really tough. The snow was rougher than yesterday. I made a little mistake in the small final. But yeah I just tried to stay focused and make it to the finish line and I am really happy with this result”Bormolini said.

Elias Huber (GER) picked up fourth. Edwin Coratti (ITA) suffered a rough qualifying session and missed the knockout rounds. Benjamin Karl (AUT) had a huge win against Daniele Baggozza (ITA) but ended in seventh. Aaron March (ITA) was fifth.

The Visa FIS Snowboard Alpine World Cup moves back to Europe for a PGS race under the lights in storied Cortina d’Ampezzo.
