Great Britain’s Huw Nightingale and Charlotte Bankes claimed their first Mixed Team win in two years on Sunday at the FIS Snowboard Cross World Cup in Cervinia.

Nightingale and Bankes last topped the Mixed Team podium at the World Cup in Les Deux Alpes in December 2023. In 2024/25 they took second in Erzurum and fourth in Montafon, but could only manage 12th at the Engadin 2025 FIS Snowboard, Freestyle and Freeski World Championships.

Italy 1’s Lorenzo Sommariva and Michela Moioli took second, with Aidan Chollet and Chloe Trespeuch of France 2 third. It was a second silver medal of the weekend for Moioli, while Chollet added bronze to his men’s silver.

Moioli and Trespeuch were first and second respectively the last time the Mixed Team was raced in Cervinia, almost two years ago exactly, with different male partners.

Surprises throughout the day

The competition was not without its surprises and dramas. In the very first quarterfinal, all eyes were on France 1, Jonas Chollet and Lea Casta. The two teenagers won their individual events on Saturday, but after Chollet finished the men’s leg of the first race in second place Casta found herself caught in a great ride from Czechia’s Eva Adamczykova and France 1 were out of the running.

The first semifinal saw a bad crash for Krystof Choura as he fought to gain ground on his opponents, leaving the Czech unable to finish and ultimately ruling the Czech team out of the small final. In the women’s leg Bankes, Moioli and Australia 1’s Josie Baff were all close before Baff had a small spill and lost ground, leaving Great Britain and Italy to claim a spot in the big final.

Good finishes from Fischer and Trespeuch gave France 2 and Germany the edge in the second semifinal after a close men’s leg.

In the big final, the men’s leg saw the lead change several times. Leon Ulbricht crossed the line first ahead of Chollet and Nightingale, with just 0.11 seconds separating the three riders and Sommariva another 0.28 seconds back.

Trespeuch got off to a fast start in the women’s leg before Fischer regained the lead, but both were being chased by Bankes and Moioli. The British rider was patient in her overtakes, before coming inside Trespeuch on turn 5 to stay ahead as Moioli also caught the Frenchwoman for second place.

For Bankes, who crashed in her quarterfinal on Saturday on her return from a collarbone injury in April, and Nightingale, who narrowly missed the finals in Friday’s qualification, the result was proof that their training was working.

“It’s been a long road but the team around me has been amazing. I’ve had great support back in the UK from the intensive rehab centre in Bisham, and the team around me here on snow. That’s meant that the return to snow’s been pretty quick,” said Bankes of her recovery.

We came here and we didn’t have any expectations, and yesterday didn’t quite go to plan but I knew I was fast and that was kind of a good step first. Then today, Huw’s been riding super well in training, it didn’t pay off for qualis but to see him riding like that today I didn’t have a choice but to pull it off, because he just smashed it.Charlotte Bankes (GBR)

Nightingale said: “Me and Charlotte take a team event day with a lot of fun, and I think that’s why we do so well in them because we just have a good time. We take each race how it comes. It’s been good to race with all the guys, the team around us has helped us a lot, and it’s really good to see Charlotte on top form again.”

Moioli also said fun had been important through the Mixed Team event.

It was a big final since the first heat, because our heats were so strong. But we went off to fight and we went to have fun. We focused heat by heat, and I think we really did a great job. We were also super-fast and we rode so well. Lorenzo gave me a lot of advantage and I had a lot of fun today.Michela Moioli (ITA)

Trespeuch is another rider on the comeback trail after giving birth just under a year ago, and she said she was content with her performance.

It was a really good race and a lovely day today. The final was very close, I was in front until the last bank, then I was overtaken, but I did my best and I’m very happy about the way I feel and my snowboarding today; and happy to share that with Aidan who’s been a great champion the whole weekend.Chloe Trespeuch (FRA)

Chollet called Trespeuch “the best teammate ever”, adding: “It was excellent, I felt really good and the races were tight.”

Baff put out an excellent finishing section in the small final to claim fifth overall for Australia 1, ahead of Italy 2 and Switzerland 2.

The Snowboard Cross World Cup tour next lands in Dongbeiya, China, between 16-18 January 2026 for two individual races – a final opportunity for riders to claim FIS points and impress their national selectors ahead of the Milano Cortina 2026 Olympic Winter Games in February.

The final three World Cup stops of the season take place in March 2026, in Erzurum, Türkiye; Montafon, Austria; and finally Monte-Sainte-Anne in Canada.
