Heavy winds force revamp of Mammoth Mountain programme

While qualification phases for all women’s events were succesfully completed on Thursday at the FIS Snowboard and Freeski World Cup events at Mammoth Mountain (USA, heavy, gusty winds wreaked havoc with the competition program here on Friday, and qualifications for men’s snowboard halfpipe, snowboard slopestyle, and freeski slopestyle were all called off due to the weather.

With Saturday originally slated to see finals for all three of those events, a huge reshuffle of the programme by officials and organizers was necessary, and after meetings on Friday afternoon a new schedule has been established for the weekend - where we expect to see much more competition-friendly weather.

Saturday morning will now open with men’s snowboard slopestyle qualifications at 9:30 PST, to be followed immediately by women’s and men’s finals at 13:00. Then, on Saturday afternoon, we’ll repeat the process for snowboard halfpipe, with men’s qualifications beginning at 17:30, followed women’s and men’s finals at 20:00.

With Saturday fully tied up with snowboard competition, men’s freeski slopestyle qualifications and finals for women and men have been moved to Sunday, which was fortunately already designated a reserve day for just this type of scenario.

The proposed schedule for Sunday’s freeski action will be available following meetings between organisers and officials on Saturday.

While it has been a difficult couple of days in Mammoth, strong commitment from the organizers and exceptional cooperation between FIS, U.S. Ski & Snowboard and Mammoth Mountain - in conjunction with two extremely promising days of weather forecast for Saturday and Sunday - has given us every reason to expect a successful and exciting completion of the World Cup programme in Mammoth.
