About the Baumgarten Award

Established in 1996 by the Baumgarten family in partnership with FIS, the International Matteo Baumgarten Award honours the life and legacy of Matteo Baumgarten, a talented young Alpine skier whose dedication to both sport and education continues to inspire athletes around the world.

The award recognizes young athletes who demonstrate excellence in their athletic careers while successfully pursuing their education. Reflecting Matteo’s commitment to achieving both sporting and academic goals, the award celebrates individuals who embody dedication, perseverance, and personal development both on and off the field of play.

Each year, FIS Member National Ski Associations may nominate outstanding athletes aged 18 to 24 competing in FIS Olympic and Paralympic disciplines. Candidates are evaluated not only on their sporting achievements but also on their educational accomplishments and commitment to personal growth.

Now in its longstanding tradition, the International Matteo Baumgarten Award remains one of the most respected recognitions for young athletes in the international snow sports community. Through this award, the Baumgarten family and FIS continue to promote the values of education, excellence, and balanced athlete development while honouring Matteo’s enduring legacy.
